The Chapel at Good Shepherd Center

Nonsequitur has a long-term agreement with Historic Seattle to use the Chapel at the Good Shepherd Center ten times per month as a venue for adventurous music and other performances of an experimental nature. We typically produce one or two events per month ourselves, and intend to make the remaining eight or nine uses available at reasonable cost to other organizations/artists presenting work related to our mission (see our web site to get a good idea of what that is; for events that fall outside of our scope, the space can be rented from Historic Seattle)

THE SPACE:

The Chapel is approximately 59’ x 60’ and seats 150 maximum. Four arched columns divide the room. Floors are wood. Ceiling is 28 feet, covered in acoustic tile. Stage is approximately 20’ wide x 15’ deep and is a raised platform six inches above the main floor (at this time there are no additional risers). Walls are wood wainscot up to ten feet, then plaster. There are 27 stained glass windows, each about 4’ x 8’ or 4' x 6'. The large white wall behind the stage can be used as a projection screen. Heating is hot water radiators (quiet in our experience so far). Sizable lobby area just outside the entrance to the Chapel with room for ticket sales/concessions/merchandise sales. Two spacious dressing rooms with direct access to restrooms. 150 padded chairs that stack on rolling carts. We are currently looking for a good quality grand piano (assistance welcome!).

LOCATION:

The Good Shepherd Center is located in Seattle’s Wallingford neighborhood at 4649 Sunnyside Ave. N (just south of 50th St.). This is just east of Interstate 5, near the University, Fremont, Meridian/"Tangletown", and Green Lake areas. The Wallingford commercial strip on 45th St., with many restaurants and bars, is within easy walking distance. The building is set back off the street, surrounded by an old apple orchard that is now Meridian Park.

Closest bus stops: #44 stops at 45th & Sunnyside (walk three blocks north on Sunnyside or Corliss); #16 stops at Meridian & 50th (enter park mid-block or on the SE corner of 50th & Meridian, or walk one long block east on 50th and a block south on Sunnyside).

ACCESSIBILITY & PARKING:

The building is wheelchair accessible. Outside the main entrance there is a ramp to the ground floor, and an elevator that goes to the Chapel. There is a large on-site parking lot.

ACOUSTICS:

The room is quite reverberant and sounds wonderful for most unamplified music. However, drum sets and electric instruments may be tricky. We are currently devising strategies for acoustic treatment that would be adjustable, allowing us to have more or less room reverberation as the context requires. There are plans to install a movable curtain along the backstage wall once funding for this has been secured.

LIGHTS:

Control console: NSI MC-7024 24-channel, two-scene preset with DMX protocol output to 1.2 kW capacity dimmers. Instruments: ETC Source Four ellipsoidals (18) and pars (12). There are three overhead bars to hang lights from: above stage, middle of room, and back of room, and there will be one vertical bar on each side of the stage at mid-room for side lights. There is an enclosed lighting booth at the rear of the room. There is also a lift to access the lights.

SOUND (still to be finalized):

Speakers: 6 KV2 EX10 speakers on movable stands + EX 2.2 subwoofer. Mixer: Mackie Onyx 1640 with firewire card, or Allen & Heath GL2400 with digital interface. Microphones: 5 or 6 basic cardioid mics, such as Shure Beta 57 or Beta 58, boom stands, cables, snakes, etc.

RENTAL FEES:

A sliding scale rate structure applies to everyone who sublets the space from us: If ticket sales are over $200, Nonsequitur gets 20%. If the door is under $200, we take nothing. The maximum we will take from your door is $250 per use.

INSURANCE:

Nonsequitur has liability insurance that covers audience and performers for our allotted ten nights per month.

BOOKING:

Dates are available on a first come, first served basis. Contact Steve Peters with event proposal and preferred dates: nonseq@drizzle.com, 206-789-1939.

Nonsequitur reserves the right to turn down proposed events that do not fit our aesthetic agenda. In this case, the space can be rented directly from Historic Seattle at their usual rates ($250 for non-profits, $500 for others).

RESTRICTIONS:

In order to maintain good relations with our neighbors both in the building and in the surrounding neighborhood, the following rules are in place:

Sound checks
can not begin before 5 PM on Monday - Friday, although it is possible to load in and begin setting up earlier than that.

The building must be empty by 11 PM, so all events must end by 10:30 at the latest.

No performances on Sundays.

Maximum audience is 150 people on Friday and Saturday, 85 on weeknights.

No alcohol may be served.

PROMOTION:

Nonsequitur can send out event announcements to our e-mail list, but presenters will be responsible for all other promotion for their shows.

STAFFING:

All presenters must provide their own staff for their events. This includes ticket takers, ushers (if needed), concessions and merchandise sales, and technical crew.

Only experienced technicians will be permitted to operate the audio and lighting equipment! If you do not have trained people working with you, we can provide you with a list of qualified freelancers.
